Course Details

This qualification reflects the role of builders, site managers, and coordinators who apply knowledge of structural principles, building codes, and standards to plan and supervise construction work. The course covers both residential and commercial building projects, equipping students with the practical and theoretical skills required to manage building operations effectively.
CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) is designed for individuals working in the building and construction industry who wish to develop their skills in planning and supervising building projects. The qualification provides a recognised pathway to becoming a licensed builder and meets the educational requirements for builder registration in many Australian states and territories.
The course is delivered over 52 weeks full-time. Delivery modes include face-to-face classroom instruction, practical hands-on workshops, and flexible online learning components. Students attend structured classes for approximately 20 hours per week. Blended learning options are available for students who require additional flexibility around work commitments.
This course includes a mandatory work placement component of 300 hours where students gain practical, hands-on experience on active construction sites under the direct supervision of licensed builders. Work placement is arranged through our extensive network of industry partners and provides invaluable real-world exposure to building site operations, safety protocols, and project management practices.
There are no formal training package entry requirements for this qualification. However, students should possess a basic understanding of construction terminology, workplace safety practices, and general building processes. Prospective students are encouraged to discuss their background with our enrolment team to ensure the course aligns with their career goals.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of course commencement. Age verification documentation such as a passport, driver licence, or birth certificate is required during the enrolment process. Mature age applicants are welcome and encouraged to apply.
International students must demonstrate English language proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.5 overall with no individual band score below 5.0. Alternative accepted tests include Pearson Test of English (PTE Academic), TOEFL iBT, and Cambridge English Advanced (CAE). Australian permanent residents and citizens may be exempt from English testing if they have completed secondary education in Australia.
Successful completion of Year 12 (or equivalent senior secondary qualification) is the standard academic entry requirement. Mature age applicants who do not hold formal qualifications may be considered based on demonstrated relevant work experience in the construction industry. A detailed resume and employer references may be requested in such cases.
Training is conducted at our purpose-built facilities in Brisbane CBD and Springfield campus. Both locations feature modern workshops, simulated construction environments, and fully equipped computer labs. All training sites are accessible by public transport and include secure parking facilities for students.
Students may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning if they have relevant industry experience, informal learning, or prior qualifications that match the competency requirements of this course. The RPL process involves a comprehensive skills assessment conducted by our qualified assessors. Evidence may include work samples, photographs, employer references, portfolios, and documented prior learning.
Students may be eligible for credit transfer if they have previously completed equivalent units of competency from another Registered Training Organisation (RTO) or from a superseded version of this qualification. Official transcripts, statements of attainment, and qualification certificates must be provided for assessment. Credit transfer can significantly reduce the duration and cost of your studies.
Upon successful completion of all required units and assessment tasks, students will be awarded the CPC40120 Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) qualification. A testamur, record of results, and statement of attainment will be issued. This nationally recognised qualification is issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
In addition to the formal qualification, graduates will develop advanced skills in project planning, cost estimation, contract administration, and team supervision. Students will also gain proficiency in interpreting building plans, understanding structural principles, and applying relevant building codes and standards. Additional micro-credentials in workplace health and safety may be awarded where applicable.
Graduates may progress to the CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building), which provides a pathway to builder licensing and more senior management roles. Higher education pathways include Bachelor degrees in Construction Management, Project Management, Civil Engineering, or Property Development. Articulation agreements with several universities provide credit towards degree programs.
This course is registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS). Graduates may be eligible for temporary graduate visa pathways under the Australian migration program. Skills assessment outcomes for migration purposes are subject to the requirements of the relevant assessing authority, such as VETASSESS or Trades Recognition Australia.
Graduates may pursue careers as registered builders, site supervisors, construction coordinators, project managers, building estimators, or contract administrators. Many graduates establish their own building businesses or progress into senior management roles within medium to large construction firms. The qualification is highly regarded by employers across residential, commercial, and civil construction sectors.
Assessment includes a variety of methods designed to verify competency across all units. These include written assignments and reports, practical demonstrations in workshop environments, workplace-based projects, case studies, simulated business scenarios, and third-party reports from workplace supervisors. Students must demonstrate competency in all assessment tasks to achieve the qualification.
This qualification requires completion of 19 units of competency in total, comprising 11 core units and 8 elective units. Elective units must be selected according to the packaging rules specified in the CPC08 Construction, Plumbing and Services Training Package. The elective selection is designed to align with occupational outcomes in building supervision and site management.
Core units include CPCCBC4001 Apply building codes and standards to residential and commercial construction, CPCCBC4003 Select, prepare and administer a construction contract, CPCCBC4004 Identify and produce estimated costs for building and construction projects, and CPCCBC4010 Apply structural principles to residential and commercial constructions. Elective units cover project supervision, site management, quality assurance, and sustainable building practices.
All units are carefully selected to ensure graduates can apply practical skills in real-world building and construction environments. The combination of core and elective units provides comprehensive coverage of building supervision, project management, and site coordination competencies. Each unit is mapped to industry requirements to ensure graduates are job-ready upon completion.
